Synopsis

John Cusack and Luke Evans star in this blood-curdling tale of terror that’s as dark and haunting as the legendary master of the macabre who inspired it — Edgar Allan Poe.

Baltimore, 1849. While investigating a horrific double murder, police detective Emmett Fields (Evans) makes a startling discovery: the killer’s methods mirror the twisted writings of Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack). Suspecting Poe at first, Fields ultimately enlists his help to stop future attacks. But in this deadly game of cat and mouse, the stakes are raised with each gruesome slaying as the pair races to catch a madman before he brings every one of Poe’s shocking stories to chilling life...and death.

Reviews

Rafer Guzman Newsday | April 28, 2012

Basically a well-researched but formulaic mystery centered on one of those nyah-nyah serial killers we've seen a thousand times.

Richard Roeper Richard Roeper.com | April 27, 2012

It's 'Saw' meets 'Sherlock Holmes.' "

Richard Corliss TIME Magazine | April 27, 2012

Until The Raven almost literally loses itself during a chase in the city sewers, it nicely balances its literary gamesmanship with a R-rated thriller's mandatory gross-out tableaux.

Lou Lumenick New York Post | April 27, 2012

It's good pulpy fun, with eye catching period trimmings, and Hungarian locations standing in ably for 19th century Maryland.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader | April 26, 2012

Edgar Allan Poe invented the detective story, so turning him into the heroic sleuth of a mystery thriller makes perfect sense.

Claudia Puig USA Today | April 26, 2012

A serial killer/Gothic drama/love story hybrid, it has some nicely mounted atmospheric scenes and strong acting from John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe.
